Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)/Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) or Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) is a rare disorder that can occur after an injury. The injury need not be severe. But the condition is very painful, hard to treat and can prevent you from working. CRPS can be caused by physical trauma of some kind, and this can include surgery.
This is not a new illness. It was diagnosed as long ago as the Civil War. The condition appears in two types, one more severe than the other. In the more serious form, there is clear nerve damage. Symptoms may worsen over time. These include burning sensations, swelling of the limbs, intense pain and muscle spasm.
It is very important that you seek medical care promptly to diagnose the condition. Treatment may help. If you cannot work, you will need to take steps to obtain Social Security Disability Insurance benefits or Supplemental Security Income.
